One of the first types that I can remember seeing advertised, and that are still available, are the type that has three tiered pans. The first pan is the sifting pan. As it is lifted out, the clean litter falls through into the middle pan, which has a solid base. The clumps stay in the first pan for disposal. Then the first pan is put into the third pan, which also has a solid base. The clean litter from the second pan is poured into the first pan, additional litter is added if needed, and the second pan is put under the third pan. Repeat as needed.

Another type of manually filtered litter box is shown below. How this one works is that you remove the top half of the litter box from the lower half that has the dirty litter in it. The top is now going to become the bottom. The "gate" is lifted up, and the clean litter is filtered out into the other half of the litter box. The dirty litter is then disposed of, the gate lowered back into place, and the box reassembled.

The two boxed above are of a smaller size, and can be tucked away where a standard sized litter box can be used. The Omega rollaway litter box is a larger box. It measures 19 1/2 by 22 by 20 inches. How this item works is that to clean, you lift and roll it. The soiled litter drops into a removable drawer for disposal, and the clean litter returns to the bottom of the litter box.
The final litter box that I will look at today is from Scoop Free. This litter box uses the scoop free litter box tray. These trays use a crystaline silica litter. This litter absorbs the moisture from urine and from the solid wastes to help prevent odors. This is a non-clumping litter, only the fecal waste is removed. The litter tray has to be changed when it becomes satureated with liquid wastes.

Next time, we will be looking at the last type of litter boxes, the automatic cleaning litter boxes.
